Get Things Done

My neighbor Gerry had a German bus
The body was shot – just a pile of rust
But the engine was fine – it ran strong and true
And he wasn’t looking – not out of his way
But he saw another bus for sale one day
With a worn-out motor and a body that looked brand new

Now he’s no mechanic – he doesn’t have the tools
But he’s brave enough or enough of a fool
To think he could swap a motor in his backyard
He invested his time, his knuckles and sweat
With trial and error he won his bet, when he
Drove that shiny bus down our boulevard

Chorus:
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but
That first step seems to be the hardest one
With a little more faith than doubt, and belief things can work out
He just takes that step and starts to get things done

Now to this day that bus runs fine
He plans to give it to his boys in time
But there were some parts left over when he was finished
He sold some off, it wasn’t too hard
Till just the body was left in his yard
And his wife told him its charm had fully diminished

Now Gerry marches to a different drum
You might think he’s crazy, or maybe dumb
But a saw he got as a gift became a plan
He cut that body into foot-wide strips
Every Tuesday night he’d quietly slip
One of those pieces into his garbage can

Chorus

At the end of the road where the garbage truck go
Dave works at the dump and wouldn’t you know
He’d been praying for help – ‘cause he needed a van
When he got the first piece he just put it aside
But one week later when the second arrived
He knew this bus was part of a/some master plan

Dave’s learning to weld, and strong in his faith
Once a week he sifts through the waste
And he always finds his piece/peace among the debris
Now you might laugh and think he’s a nut
You go ahead, I tell you what,
You explain how he’s getting that bus for free

Chorus:
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but
That first step seems to be the hardest one
With a little more faith than doubt, and belief things can work out
You might take that step and start to get things done
